Why People hate Soccer?

April 14, 2010

Many people enjoy watching soccer . Mostly its because it gets really exciting at some points or its a really good match up. On the other hand, people also hate soccer. They think its just a waste of time or they don’t get the whole idea of going back and forth with the ball. They say it gets boring watching a bunch of players fight for the ball and get knocked down on the floor. They might also hate it because they feel its a waste of their time. Watching the game and waiting for something to happen seems dull to them. Maybe when they play it, it might be different. In that case, people like it better.

Instead of watching a game, they could play it and see what it feels like. But there is always something that makes them not want to play. In that case the reason might be the running you have to do. I understand that it may get tiring but the running could also be a good thing. It helps get in shape and burn off some of the calories that you got from fatty foods.

Soccer may seem boring to some, but its the world's favorite sport.

So overall, the reasons that people hate soccer are because they feel it’s a waste of their time, they hate waiting for something to happen, when they play they don’t like the running, and because you have to be chasing after the ball. They might be things that might be true for a lot of people, but the majority like soccer and for those who don’t like it, say oh well to them. They don’t know what they are missing out on. S

No more dropping out

March 10, 2010

Students nowadays think its cool to just drop out of school, not caring what could become of their future. And as the years keep coming, the percentage of students dropping out seems to be increasing. Something has to be done in order to stop this, students need to get the right education in order to become something succesful in life. Our president is coming up with ideas and plannig new ways in order to help out the underperfoming schools.

All schools with a graduating rate of  60% and below will be helped out. But in order to receive help these schools have been told to that they have 4 options. One of those options involves turning a regular high school into a charter school. Which explains why recently most of the highschools in LAUSD are changeing into charter schools.

The new policy hopes to reduce the drop out rate.

Wanting To Get Skinny May Cost Health Problems

March 5, 2010

In this century, everyone wants to lose weight to look good so they go on diets, but do they really know the consequences of all this?? Looking good has a cost, and in this case, the cost is your health.

Dieting can be dangerous for your health.

People see “fat” as something wrong that they should lose by going on diets. What mostly people dont know is that some of that “fat”, which is actually sometimes “baby fat” is needed in our bodies to help us stay healthy.  Not having enough fat may sometimes stop ovulation, which is necessary if a woman wants to become pregnant.

Going on diets may cause someone to become anorexic, which starves the heart, making it weaker. Another health issue it might lead to is dehydration; if the person is vomiting in order to lose their weight, they will eventually lose the liquid that the human body needs. Vomiting may also cause other damage, like losing your teeth because you don’t have anymore calcium left in your body.

Italian Food

February 28, 2010

Spaghetti and meatballs is a favorite traditional Italian dish.

Italy is known for their 2 main courses, pizza and spaghetti. In my opinion, Italian food is the best!! My favorite type of Italian food would have to be Spaghetti, yumm!=D People may say that Spaghetti is a lot of carbs; I say yes, but its so good! We all know that Marco Polo brought spaghetti to Europe from the Far East in the late 13th century.

Pasta certainly existed in places other than Italy, however. The Chinese had been making isinct e at least 3000 B.C. And Greece claimed its share of the credit — according to Greek mythology, the Greek God Vulcan invented a device that created long strings of dough. There are so many ways people have their Spaghetti. My favorite is the original, pasta, marinara sauce, meat balls, and parmesan cheese, with toasted garlic bread. Some of other ways people enjoy having their Spaghetti prepared are Chicken Alfredo, Fettuccine and linguine. Some other pastas are Lasagna, Cannelloni, Bucatini, and much, much more.

Drummers

February 28, 2010

There are different types of drummers everywhere and if I asked them, “would it be better to know different styles of drumming?” they would say it would make you a better drummer. I agree, if you only know one style of drumming then you’d only be good at that one style and you would never expand your learning abilities.

Some people who play drums are natural at it and others have to take the time to learn and practice and get better so it takes a little bit longer for them to learn. From Underoath’s Aaron Gillespie to Skillet’Jen Ledger. Every drummer is talented and pretty brave to get behind a drumset and play. It’s not as easy as it looks, but it’s really fun especially when you’re playing with other people. I’m not an expert on drums, but I’ve wanted to play since I was in sixth grade and I’ve already been playing for about a year and three months and I have a lot more to learn because there’s so much more to the drums than just playing.

Music Proposal

February 23, 2010

Listening to music helps improve productivity. Why? One reason is because music acts like white noise in the background preventing students from noticing every other little noise that usually distracts them. Some kids can’t tune out things like a pencil or quarter dropping or someone asking a question. Their brain takes everything in; consequently, they are often distracted and off task in the classroom.

Just so there is no confusion here, I want to say that I do not advocate listening to music during a lesson when a teacher is  teaching or during class discussions. During these times students need to be attentive listeners and pay attention to what is going on in the class.

There are some guidelines for this to work effectively. After discussing using music as a tool to assist with concentration and focus with classmates, there was a positive response and suggestions towards making this new methos of concentration and focus to work in school.

These are the guidelines:

1. Listen to music that you know and love. Listening to new, unfamiliar music is distracting (your brain focuses on the new) and that defeats the purpose.

2. Listen to your own music on your own iPod, Mp3 player etc. Absolutely no sharing. Sharing wastes time and causes commotion that is distracting to other students and that defeats the purpose.

3. Listen to your music after the teacher has taught the lesson. Listening to music while teaching distracts you from what teachers are saying and that defeats the purpose.

My peers and classmates are cool about the whole music thing in class. They understand the need for guidelines and usually don’t push too often. It’s amazing to see the kids hooked up to their music and working away, doing far more while listening to their music than they would without listening to their music.

Flying high part 2

February 3, 2010

Upon arriving at Washington Dulles airport In washington D.C, I was really tired, but mostly hungry. I arrived a bit after 12:00pm. The first thing I did after I got off the plane was to look for food. Flying in the air for five hours and a half almost six, with no food, sucks. I did get some snacks at LAX but no food.

I had to wait for my connecting flight at IAD which was an hour and half lay over. As soon as my flight was called i walked to the terminal on which my plane was waiting on the tarmac. this was another exciting plane ride on a small canadian plane. a two seater to be specific. The plane was full and it was mostly young kids and elderly people.

The person who i was sitting next to started talking to me as we took off from IAD. when we were up in the sky, it was a nice view. From IAD i was on my way to Connecticut. we flew over New York City and over a few small cities. the experience from the sky over seeing everything was awesome. Passing through each cloud seemed like you were in heaven.

As the plane started to get to a lower altitude I knew we were close to the airport. The plane touched down at Bradley International Airport in Hartford, Connecticut. It was a beautiful place, and flying for almost 8 hours was fun.

After getting off the plane I went to the baggage area to claim my stuff, upon getting my luggage I saw a lady with a sign that read “Gabriel Galan.” I felt like the president of the United States for a few seconds. When I went up to tell her that was me, she was glad to finally see me. She offered to buy me some food and of course I didn’t hesitate to say yes.

We bought pizza and started talking. She told me her background and that she was a counselor for the Putney Student Travel Program at Amherst College in Massachusetts. Her name was Lydia, she was a 28 year old woman who was born and raised in England and came to United States to attend College. She lived in Chicago for a few years.

By that time it was already 4:00pm, she told me we were waiting on another student from Spain who was also attending the same program in Amherst. Instead of making two trips she asked if  I would stay with her and wait. the other international student finally showed up  two hours after and was also a bit lost as i was when he got off the plane.

His name was Julio Campero and he was from Spain. his older brother had attended the Putney Program last summer. After leaving the airport we had a 40 minute drive to the college. On the way we were talking about ourselves.

Meeting new people was a cool experience. seeing the farms, cows, horses and buffalo was even better. We arrived to the campus around 8:00pm and I was really tired. First thing I did was go to my dorm and fix my bed. It was a long night and we had to meet our teachers and the other students who were also there. I got up the next morning and was ready to begin my first day in a new City with new people.Aerial Shot of Bradley A

History of Valentine’s Day

February 3, 2010

How Did it all Start?

The story of Valentine’s Day started back in  February 14  270 A.D  when Emperor Claudius  II was executed. During this time, there were problems going on in Rome. The army needed more men to enroll to go protect the country. Men were not enrolling to go serve and Emperor Claudiu II thought it was because the men didnt want to leave their families and their loved ones behind, so he took action to solve this problem. He did this by banning all marriages and engagements in Rome.

Valentine, who was a priest for Rome, realized it was a great injustice to everyone. He decided to take action as well and continued performing marriages for couples. When he was discovered, Emperor Claudius ordered that he be put to death. He was condemened to be beaten with clubs to death and have his head cut off.

Valentine was dragged through the streets of the Prefect of Rome. When Valentine was arrested, he was sent to prison where he became friends with the jailer’s daughter. When they were about to execute him, he wrote a farewell letter to the daughter and signed the end with “…From Your Valentine.”

Alhambra CERT Members taking a break from their 5 hour training.

During an earthquake or a fire the first thing on your mind is to escape. For others what comes to their minds is to protect and help people get out safely. The prime focus of C.E.R.T (Community Emergency Response Team) is to help other people in a major disaster. When I took CERT I didn’t know what to expect or what type of training they were offering.

As the first session started, they talked about how people panic during a huge disaster and how they all try to escape at the same time.  The sessions teaches how to help save a life. It can also teach you to help others keep calm and treat the injured if we were in a big disaster. CERT offers seven sessions in preparing you to assist someone in need of help. they give you a CERT backpack filled with  medical supplies such as: C.E.R.T. hard hat ,green backpack, heavy duty working gloves, vented chemical goggles, 12 hour light stick, safety vest, dust mask, large mayday solar blanket, flashlight, pair of batteries, 15 inch pry bar, and a lumber .

The classes C.E.R.T offers are: Disaster Prepareness, disaster fire suppression, disaster medical operation part I & II, light search and rescue operations, disaster psychology and team organization and then you have a scenario disaster as your last course. When you complete all 7 courses you get a certificate and your part of the homeland security team as well as F.E.M.A (Federal Emergency Management Agency) C.E.R.T might soon start here at Wilson High School, with the R.O.E (Rock On Education) Program.
